Baruch Hashem, in a fascinating talk delivered in 1990, the Lubavitcher Rebbe addressed threats of terorrism by declaring, “No one should be frightened or cause others to fear, but everyone should appreciate the need to increase, in a spirit of happiness and security, their Torah study, prayer, and gifts to charity.”
The Rebbe taught, “There is a popular adage, ‘Think good, and it will be good.” This means that our positive thoughts influence the actual course of events and assure that, in fact, the ultimate outcome will be good.”
Here are three lines I found fascinating from this talk as they relate to the three actions the Rebbe encouraged us all (men, women, and children) to focus on:
INCREASE IN YOUR TORAH STUDY: “Devoting oneself to Torah study with an absolute commitment will uproot and nullify any possible negative influences.”
INCREASE IN YOUR PRAYER: “Everyone should recite at least three additional chapters of Psalms, including the final psalm, Psalm 150, which concludes, ‘Let every being that has a soul praise the L‑rd. Halleluyah.”
INCREASE IN YOUR TZEDOKAH: “In other times, the response to the present situation would be to declare communal fasts. In keeping with the approach of ‘thinking good,’ such fasts are not appropriate. Nevertheless, it is appropriate to “redeem” the fasts through an increase in Tzedokah. Therefore, it’s proper that everyone donate the value of 3 meals to Tzedokah, preferably given to people who study Torah or to institutions that spread Torah wherever possible.”
Thank you for giving of your time to read this. May Hashem give us the strength to take action and, as the Rebbe said, “Surely, if we ‘think good, things will become good,’ and we will merit the ultimate good, the coming of Moshiach, AMEN!!!”
